Science and Medicine Academic Research Training (SMART) Program

Intensive hands-on research experiences for local high-school seniors

SMART provides a yearlong research experience with investigators at LSU Health Shreveport for 10-12 academically advanced high school seniors who have a career interest in medicine, biomedical research, or biomedical engineering. Over 167 students from Caddo and Bossier parish high schools have participated in the SMART program, which is in starting its 17th year. SMART has met with considerable success as the student-participants excel in state, national and international science competitions, including the Siemens-Westinghouse, BioGENEius and Intel Science competitions. Over 80% of SMART students continue their education as science majors at colleges or universities nationwide, and many continue their education to earn doctorate and medical degrees.
