Environmental and Spatial Technology (EAST) Program at Southwood High School Using technology to solve everyday problems

EAST is a highly innovative, community project-based program that integrates teamwork, independent problem-solving, and community service and technology skills. Students use state of the art computer technology to solve authentic problems that are community service oriented, such as developing an online school bus schedule for Caddo Parish parents, mapping golf courses and parks with GPS to facilitate access by emergency responders, developing websites for nonprofits, or creating safety video documentaries for K-12 students. All interested, regularly attending students are eligible to take EAST as an elective. The classes are coordinated by "facilitators" rather than "teachers" who are trained to allow students to learn through problem-solving and peer mentoring. In 2006, EAST expanded the number of participants from 160 to 320 students per year.
