BioStart Internship Program for Biotechnology Magnet Academy Seniors
Putting Education to Practice: Hands on Laboratory Experience

Launched in Fall 2009, the BioStart Internship Program gives seniors from the Biotechnology Magnet Academy the opportunity to conduct a research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor in LSU Health Shreveport's research laboratories. Students spend three hours each day for one-semester, or approximately 18 weeks, with their faculty mentor. Approximately 14-16 seniors per year participate each year. At the end of the semester, students present the results of their research at poster sessions, regional conferences, science competitions, and public outreach venues.

In 2010, BioStart, with LSU Health Shreveport as its administrator, received a Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) from the National Institutes of Health for $1.3 million over five years - the first SEPA grant awarded to a project in Louisiana.

This program is open only to students who have completed the first three years of the Biotechnology Magnet Academy. For more information, please contact Kenneth E. McMartin, Ph.D., Professor and BioStart Project Director, Department of Pharmacology, Toxicology & Neuroscience, LSU Health Shreveport, kmcmar@lsuhsc.edu TEL: 318.675.7871.
